New Website is Up!

The new EPC website is finally up and running! There are going to be a few more features added, such as a gallery and forum, but the basic information is there. Also some new images will be put up.

Edited to add: I'm so sorry if you get an annoying pop-up screen! I'm not sure how to get rid of this, short of changing hosting sites.

Could members bring along raffle prizes and 2 plates of food for supper - one sweet and one savoury.

Commonwealth Challenge Competition

The Commonwealth Challenge was judged last night, Tuesday 5th December 2006, with 20 slides each submitted by EPC, the Christchurch Photographic Society of New Zealand, and the Highcliffe & Infinity Camera Club of the UK. The judge was Steven Wigg.

Our President, Peter Phillips, commented before the competition that, since the English cricket team had just lost the second Ashes Test here in Adelaide today, perhaps the Highcliffe & Infinity club can get some revenge by winning the Commonwealth Challenge. You guessed it, they did.

The final tally was: EPC 142 points, Christchurch 143 points, and Highcliffe 146 points. The top slide, which was the only one scoring a 10, was by Peter Cheung of EPC. Well done Peter.

Pinhole Photography website

I just came across this site today, and thought it might be worthwhile to look around. In today's world where we are becoming more and more digital, it's interesting to look at the most basic form of photography. It contains lots of links to other sites related to pinhole photography. Happy surfing!

The Great Photographic Challenge Results

The Great Photographic Challenge was judged on Tuesday May 30, by a number of our club members (who weren't competitors). Out of the 10 members who participated on the actual challenge day, 6 submitted their best shots of each topic and were given a score out of 10. The results were so close, that the total score for the top 3 competitors were only separated by 2 points!

Congratulations to Bev, who scored 62, to Wally who scored 61.5 , and to Tina who scored 60. Although there was only one trophy, everyone who entered got some enjoyment out of the exercise, and the members who had a go at judging the entries got an appreciation of how hard it is for judges!

Interclub Competition: EPC vs Eastern Suburbs Camera Club

Last night EPC hosted the interclub competition, and both clubs entered a set of 30 slides, plus 15 monochrome prints and 15 large colour prints. Our judge was Michael Meston, who gave thoughtful comments on the work and congratulated everyone on the high standard of entries. It was a tight competition, and the results were:

EPC: Monochrome prints 110 , Large colour prints 125, Slides 184, Total 419
ESCC: Monochrome prints 119 , Large colour prints 125, Slides 175 , Total 419

I don’t remember a night when the interclub competition resulted in a tie!

The top slide was “Beautiful Boy”, by Peter Cheung of EPC, the top monochrome print was “Geelong Pier” by Renee Holmes of ESCC, and the top colour print was “Metallic Steel” by Ros Holmes of ESCC. It would be great if I could show you these winning entries as they are outstanding photographs. Maybe next time.

Strathalbyn Challenge Report

Last Sunday was the Great Photographic Challenge at Strathalbyn, where 10 members were given the use of a basic fixed lens (28 mm) camera loaded with film, and a list of 8 subjects to photograph. The subjects were: railway station, rolling stock, bridge over the Angus River, the old SA Bank building, main street scene, a touch of blue, old church, and photographer’s choice – a photo that says it was taken at Strathalbyn.

As we drove through the hills toward the town there was a light sprinkling of rain, but it cleared by the time we reached Strathalbyn. We weren’t quite sure what the weather would be like as the forecast was for showers. Fortunately the rain held off and all we had to contend with was the ever changing light, from a dull overcast sky to patchy clouds and then bright sunshine later in the afternoon.

A café at the end of the main street was the meeting point to collect our cameras for the challenge. We were given a couple of hours to complete the task, and then return to the café to give Reg the cameras so he could organise processing of the films. All the subjects were fairly close together so easy to get to on foot, or a short car trip. A few of us also took our own cameras to compare photos taken with both.

The challenge was a great success, as it made us think about the subjects and look for interesting ways or angles to photograph them. Everyone had different interpretations of the subjects, and so the judging of the photos on May 30 should be interesting.

An Enchanted Evening at Glenelg

A group of about 10 of us met at 5 pm Tuesday at the Glenelg Jetty, armed with our cameras, both film and digital, and a couple of filters. Reg was looking to get low-angled light shots for the upcoming set subject competition, I wanted to get some shots for a mock tourist brochure I'm doing for a TAFE assignment.

There was no wind, and it was a lovely mild evening. As the sun got lower in the sky, the buildings on the foreshore glowed in the golden light. The sea glimmered. There was a large bank of clouds near the horizon which then temporarily dulled the light as the sun went down behind them. A few minutes later the same clouds turned red, giving everyone a lovely sunset to photograph. The people walking along the jetty, a couple of guys paddling on their surf boards, the odd boat sailing past presented lots of photogenic opportunities. The seagulls weren't as cooperative, though.

A highlight (although it was too dark by that time for me to photograph) was seeing a dolphin swim so close to the shore that you could just about wade out to touch it.

Photo Shoots

Our enthusiastic Practicals Director Reg has organised a photo shoot with models to be held on Saturday 6th May at the Botanic Gardens from 2 pm. Cost is $10 to cover model fees and film and processing for the models' photos.

The Great Photographic Challenge

This is an annual event where club members gather at a specified place and are given a list of 8 subjects to photograph on the day. What's the catch? Members can't use their own equipment, but are given the use of a cheap fixed lens compact camera which is loaded with a roll of 24 exposure film. This is a challenge to see what you can come up with using the most basic of equipment. At the end of the day, all cameras and films are returned to Reg, who will arrange to get the films processed and returned to members at the next meeting. The idea is to choose the best shot of each subject to be entered into a special competition.

This year the event is to be held at Strathalbyn on Sunday April 30. Cost is $10 per member, to cover the cost of film and processing.

On Tuesday May 30 the Great Photographic Challenge will be judged, each photograph will be given a score out of 10, and the person who scores the most points in total will be awarded the Great Photographic Challenge 2006 trophy.
