When: Tuesday June 3rd, 2008
Time: 7.30 pm
Where: "Kandahar", 327 Marion Road, North Plympton.

Tuesday May 20 Guest Speaker, Richard Harris

Richard Harris will be presenting underwater photography from around the world. He is one of Australia's foremost dive photographers, so this is an evening not to be missed. Friends and relatives of members are most welcome to come along.

Club Outing, Coromandel Valley, Sunday 18th May, 2 pm

Meet in the small shopping centre car park, corner of Main Road and Oakdene Crescent. Taking camera, tripod, etc, walk across Main Road and follow paths along Sturt River Linear Park. The track to the right leads to, and just beyond Winn's Road. Cross Winn's Road and have a look at the historic Winn's Bakery. It will be open from 2-4pm - cost $2 entry fee. The track hits private property just beyond the old bakery. The track to the left also meanders along the Sturt River (really just a babbling brook) until opening out in a park near Shepherd Court. It is all easy walking, but wear good walking shoes/boots and be prepared to photograph small cascades and creek scenes. Allow at least 1 1/2 hours to do both left and right paths and perhaps retire to Rimini's at Blackwood's Magnet Shopping Centre on Coromandel Parade for coffee.

The weather forcast is for a few showers on Sunday, so take a rain jacket just in case.

Depth of Field Calculator

How many of us are able to calculate the exact Depth of Field for all of our lenses at the various apertures and hyperfocal distances when there is no depth of field scale on the lens to use (as is the case now with most new lenses), or even if there is a scale if you are using an older lens?

We know, or should know, that the smaller the aperture and the further we are from our point of focus, the greater is the depth of field. As we get closer to our subject the depth of field becomes more critical. This can be a major factor in macro photography, where you need very small apertures to get the most depth of field. With this, lighting usually becomes another problem.

Using a 50 mm Macro lens set to take 1:1, that is life size on the film plane, and an aperture of f32, then your depth of field can be as small as 3 mm. In portrait photography a focal length lens of between 100 - 150 mm is considered best for natural looking portraits. The depth of field available at say, 3 metres at f11 with a 150 mm lens, is 160 mm using these tables.

The amount of depth of field available becomes difficult to calculate if we are using a zoom lens or a digital camera where depth of field scales are not shown.

This website may help: http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

The list of cameras available is in alphabetical order and the tables for any and all cameras are available using the drop down list, as is the distances in either feet and inches or in metres.

On this web site there is an interactive depth of field calculator where you are able to find out the depth of field available for all lenses of all focal lengths, including digital camera lenses at any chosen aperture. If you are handy there are also instructions on how to make a depth of field calculator which, if made small enough, will fit on a lens cap.

This is an interesting site and well worth a visit.

Great Photographic Challenge, Sunday 30th March

The Great Photographic Challenge is where members meet at a particular location and are given a list of subjects to photograph using the most basic of cameras, which are provided by the club at a cost of $10, to cover film processing. A time limit is given, and cameras are returned to Reg, who will organise processing. When prints are returned the idea is to pick the best ones of each subject, and enter them for judging on April 8. The person who gets the highest total score will win a trophy.

This Sunday we are meeting at 1.30 pm at the rotunda in Elder Park, near the Festival Centre in the city.

Due to the continuation of the heat wave this weekend the Great Photographic Challenge that was scheduled for Sunday has been postponed.  It will now be held on Sunday 30th March.  Here's hoping we will actually get nice autumn weather then!

Digital Competition Rules updated

I've uploaded the updated file to a free file hosting site. You can download the file by clicking on the link below.

EPC Digital.pdf

Edited 15 August: The above link has expired. The new link on our new website: http://www.e-p-c.org.au/files/EPCDigital.pdf

Website problems and Digital Competitions Rules update

At the moment I'm unable to update the website with the update to the Digital Competitions Rules.

The main thing that has been corrected is the reference to the file name for your entries in the competition. An example for May 2007, of an image by Keith Seidel, in the Open section, his third entry, with a title of “Wondering”, would be “1-5-07o Wondering K1S3.jpg”. Have a space between the title and the code but NO spaces within the code digits.

A Pleasant Sunday Outing

A small group of dedicated photographers met at the Mount Barker for the Jazz and Heritage festival. It was an opportunity to see and photograph the Steamranger, as well as Jazz musicians, vintage cars, and various steam engines as well as the local area. The weather was fine although the wind was a bit cold, and the light was good for photography. Overall it was a good day, which was finished off with a light meal and coffee at a local cafe, while listening to an excellent young jazz trio playing outside.

SAPF Camera Club News

CC News is a PDF file and a copy of Acrobat reader is required to read it. The reader can be downloaded for free from the Adobe website. http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html A printed copy of the CC News will still be posted to those club members who have already subscribed for this year."

The evening will be an opportunity to practice some sunset, twilight, and night photography. If you have your night photography guide, bring that along to get some idea of what aperture and shutter speeds to use. See you there.

Looking for theme ideas?

I've come across the Weekly Shot blog, which is good for ideas and inspiration on what to photograph. They have a weekly theme, which for this week is "Trees", and last week was "Look Up". Joining the group is by invitation only, but there is a link to a sister site called Vazaar, which will eventually be open to everyone. So if you are looking for a challenge to help you improve your photography, check out both sites for ideas.

You might notice a few changes to this blog. I've added a few new links to the list on the side, plus I've converted the template to a new layout version which is easier to customise in blogger.

New Website is Up!

The new EPC website is finally up and running! There are going to be a few more features added, such as a gallery and forum, but the basic information is there. Also some new images will be put up.

Edited to add: I'm so sorry if you get an annoying pop-up screen! I'm not sure how to get rid of this, short of changing hosting sites.

Commonwealth Challenge Competition

The Commonwealth Challenge was judged last night, Tuesday 5th December 2006, with 20 slides each submitted by EPC, the Christchurch Photographic Society of New Zealand, and the Highcliffe & Infinity Camera Club of the UK. The judge was Steven Wigg.

Our President, Peter Phillips, commented before the competition that, since the English cricket team had just lost the second Ashes Test here in Adelaide today, perhaps the Highcliffe & Infinity club can get some revenge by winning the Commonwealth Challenge. You guessed it, they did.

The final tally was: EPC 142 points, Christchurch 143 points, and Highcliffe 146 points. The top slide, which was the only one scoring a 10, was by Peter Cheung of EPC. Well done Peter.

Pinhole Photography website

I just came across this site today, and thought it might be worthwhile to look around. In today's world where we are becoming more and more digital, it's interesting to look at the most basic form of photography. It contains lots of links to other sites related to pinhole photography. Happy surfing!

The Great Photographic Challenge Results

The Great Photographic Challenge was judged on Tuesday May 30, by a number of our club members (who weren't competitors). Out of the 10 members who participated on the actual challenge day, 6 submitted their best shots of each topic and were given a score out of 10. The results were so close, that the total score for the top 3 competitors were only separated by 2 points!

Congratulations to Bev, who scored 62, to Wally who scored 61.5 , and to Tina who scored 60. Although there was only one trophy, everyone who entered got some enjoyment out of the exercise, and the members who had a go at judging the entries got an appreciation of how hard it is for judges!

Tuesday May 23 - Guest speaker - Jan Forrest of the SA Museum.

Interclub Competition: EPC vs Eastern Suburbs Camera Club

Last night EPC hosted the interclub competition, and both clubs entered a set of 30 slides, plus 15 monochrome prints and 15 large colour prints. Our judge was Michael Meston, who gave thoughtful comments on the work and congratulated everyone on the high standard of entries. It was a tight competition, and the results were:

EPC: Monochrome prints 110 , Large colour prints 125, Slides 184, Total 419
ESCC: Monochrome prints 119 , Large colour prints 125, Slides 175 , Total 419

I don’t remember a night when the interclub competition resulted in a tie!

The top slide was “Beautiful Boy”, by Peter Cheung of EPC, the top monochrome print was “Geelong Pier” by Renee Holmes of ESCC, and the top colour print was “Metallic Steel” by Ros Holmes of ESCC. It would be great if I could show you these winning entries as they are outstanding photographs. Maybe next time.

Strathalbyn Challenge Report

Last Sunday was the Great Photographic Challenge at Strathalbyn, where 10 members were given the use of a basic fixed lens (28 mm) camera loaded with film, and a list of 8 subjects to photograph. The subjects were: railway station, rolling stock, bridge over the Angus River, the old SA Bank building, main street scene, a touch of blue, old church, and photographer’s choice – a photo that says it was taken at Strathalbyn.

As we drove through the hills toward the town there was a light sprinkling of rain, but it cleared by the time we reached Strathalbyn. We weren’t quite sure what the weather would be like as the forecast was for showers. Fortunately the rain held off and all we had to contend with was the ever changing light, from a dull overcast sky to patchy clouds and then bright sunshine later in the afternoon.

A café at the end of the main street was the meeting point to collect our cameras for the challenge. We were given a couple of hours to complete the task, and then return to the café to give Reg the cameras so he could organise processing of the films. All the subjects were fairly close together so easy to get to on foot, or a short car trip. A few of us also took our own cameras to compare photos taken with both.

The challenge was a great success, as it made us think about the subjects and look for interesting ways or angles to photograph them. Everyone had different interpretations of the subjects, and so the judging of the photos on May 30 should be interesting.

An Enchanted Evening at Glenelg

A group of about 10 of us met at 5 pm Tuesday at the Glenelg Jetty, armed with our cameras, both film and digital, and a couple of filters. Reg was looking to get low-angled light shots for the upcoming set subject competition, I wanted to get some shots for a mock tourist brochure I'm doing for a TAFE assignment.

There was no wind, and it was a lovely mild evening. As the sun got lower in the sky, the buildings on the foreshore glowed in the golden light. The sea glimmered. There was a large bank of clouds near the horizon which then temporarily dulled the light as the sun went down behind them. A few minutes later the same clouds turned red, giving everyone a lovely sunset to photograph. The people walking along the jetty, a couple of guys paddling on their surf boards, the odd boat sailing past presented lots of photogenic opportunities. The seagulls weren't as cooperative, though.

A highlight (although it was too dark by that time for me to photograph) was seeing a dolphin swim so close to the shore that you could just about wade out to touch it.

Photo Shoots

Our enthusiastic Practicals Director Reg has organised a photo shoot with models to be held on Saturday 6th May at the Botanic Gardens from 2 pm. Cost is $10 to cover model fees and film and processing for the models' photos.

The Great Photographic Challenge

This is an annual event where club members gather at a specified place and are given a list of 8 subjects to photograph on the day. What's the catch? Members can't use their own equipment, but are given the use of a cheap fixed lens compact camera which is loaded with a roll of 24 exposure film. This is a challenge to see what you can come up with using the most basic of equipment. At the end of the day, all cameras and films are returned to Reg, who will arrange to get the films processed and returned to members at the next meeting. The idea is to choose the best shot of each subject to be entered into a special competition.

This year the event is to be held at Strathalbyn on Sunday April 30. Cost is $10 per member, to cover the cost of film and processing.

On Tuesday May 30 the Great Photographic Challenge will be judged, each photograph will be given a score out of 10, and the person who scores the most points in total will be awarded the Great Photographic Challenge 2006 trophy.
